Getting Started with Lightroom 5

At the outset, you should understand the features of Adobe Lightroom. Well, Adobe Lightroom provides a lot of features to work with. Along with the basic brightness,contrast, color adjustment settings and rich features like Adjustment Brush, Radial Filter, Graduated Filter, Spot removal tool etc. it provides great image organizing features too. Because of these available features, this software can be regarded as a photographer’s best friend to organize and retouch photos.

  1. Library Module
  2. This is the first module where you land once you open Lightroom. It provides you various features to organize your photos.

    On the left side you can see 5 various panels.

    • Navigator Panel displays your selected image.

    • In the Catalog Panel you can browse various images from the active catalog.

    • The Folder Panel displays actual folders on the hard drive. It displays only those folder that have been requested via the import process.

    • Collections are virtual folders which allows photos to be grouped without modifying the actual folder structure.

    • Publish Service panel provides features to send photos straight from your Lightroom window to Flicker, Behance, Facebook etc. But first you need to create a link between those sites and Lightroom.

    • Import button is used to import photos into Lightroom workspace from SD card, hard drive or any other storage devices.

    • Export button is used to export photos from Lightroom to your storage devices.

  3. Develop Module
  4. The Develop module is where you enhance your photos. Here you can enhance a single photo or batch of photos without any problem. All the changes you make in Lightroom are non harmful. That means your actual file is not altered whether it is a RAW file or JPEG/TIFF file. Lightroom store all those changes in its Catalog.

    1. Navigator

    Navigator

    Navigator displays your selected image in a small area. Clicking on a certain area on the photo in the Navigator panel will zoom in that area to 100% in the main viewing area ( the center of the Lightroom window ).

    2. Presets

    Presets

    This area contains some predefined set of presets, each containing a lot of adjusted controls, that you can apply straight to your photo. You can also create your own presets by clicking on the “+” button.


    3. Snapshots

    Snapshots

    While editing your photo if you find a point where your photo looks pretty good just press the “+” button in the Snapshot panel. It will save all the changes up to that time. Later on you can restore the photo to that exact time if needed.

    4. History

    History

    Any changes you make in Develop are saved in catalog. History shows all those changes on a selected photo. You can go to any of those saved points by clicking on the history list.


    5. Collections

    Collections

    Collections are virtual folders which allows photos to be grouped without modifying the actual folder structure.

    7. Basic Tools

    Basic Tools

    Contains all the adjustment settings starting with White balance, Exposure, Contrast and other tone controls.


    6. Filmstrip

    Filmstrip

    Displays the set of images from the selected folder. Clicking on any of these photos will bring that photo into the main working area for retouching.


    8. Tool Strip

    Tool Strip

    Contains tools to perform local edits to a certain area of a photo. Standard tools under this section are Crop Overlay, Spot Removal, Red Eye Correction, Graduated Filter, Radial Filter, Adjustment Brush. Select any tool to open its options in the tool drawer.

    9. Histogram Panel

    Histogram

    Displays the histogram of the selected photo. A histogram is a graph that displays the amount of blacks, shadows, exposure, highlights, and whites in an image along with its color info.

    In this module you can group your photos based on location information. Now a days most of the cameras are embedded with GPS devices. If your photos already contain GPS data it will be shown on the map. What if GPS data are not filled? Don’t worry you can still add your photos manually.

    If you want to frame your memories from a special trip or want to frame some photos for your client you can use this amazing feature in Lightroom. In Book module you can create a photo book so that you can print it later on or create pdf out of it. A photo book is an pleasant way to showcase your great work.

    Here you can create and publish a slide-show with background music by sequencing your images to tell the perfect story.

    Need to print some photos in good quality? Lightroom provides a lot of feature to arrange and print your photos in the best quality.

    The Web module allows you to create HTML or Flash web galleries to showcase it on your website. Lightroom provides a range of predefined templates to layout and create a stunning photo gallery. You can also create your own templates based on your selected photos.

  • Lightroom Catelog
  • A catalog is a database that contains the location of your photos and information about them. When you retouch your photos, add keywords to them, rate them, or do other things to photos in Lightroom, all of those changes are saved in the catalog. The photo files themselves remain unchanged.

  • Importing photos into Lightroom workspace
  • To import photos in to Lightroom workspace just click on the “Import” button on the bottom left corner of Library module, or click on File -> Import Photos and Video menu ( Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+I ).

    Select Source folder. This will preview all the photos from the selected folder on the right hand side. Select or tick all those required photos you want to import. Then select your destination folder and click on Import button.
    After importing photos your workspace will look like –
